Vitamin D2, chemically called ergocalciferol, can be produced by UV light and ergosterol. According to the 2011 U.S. diagnostic guidelines, ergocalciferol may be a dietary supplement to supplement vitamin D, which is as effective as cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), which is produced by the skin when exposed to ultraviolet light. Vitamin D2 is absorbed by the small intestine, and its absorption requires bile salts to be combined with special α-globulin and then transported to other parts of the body, where they are stored in the liver and fat. Metabolism and activation pass through the liver first, followed by the kidneys. The onset time of action is 12 to 24 hours, and the therapeutic effect takes 10 to 14 days.
